Darwin is the bustling, growing tropical capital city of the Northern Territory with over 110,000 people. It is a city that is expanding quickly both economically and physically. Experts predict Darwin’s population will grow to 180,000 over the next 20 years.It is a city where the people are warm, friendly and hospitable.
Darwin is a pioneering city, a city that has overcome overwhelming odds such as the ravages of disease in it’s early history, isolation through sheer distance Japanese invasion during WWII, Cyclone Tracy and other natural disasters. She has always fought back , and honourable trait that is reflected through her persistent people.
During the East Timor crisis in 2000 hundreds of fleeing refugees were flown to Darwin and cared for by our community. Similarly, following the Bali bombing which took the lives of many people, Darwin became a hub for care, assistance and healing.
Indigenous people make up 29% of the population in the Northern Territory compared to the national average of 10%. We believe the indigenous people hold a key role in seeing revival in Australia, and aim to engage with indigenous youth to see them rise in leadership and fulfil their destiny.
Darwin in strategically located as a gateway to Asia, with an exciting multicultural flavour throughout the city. We believe Darwin’s destiny is tied with being a blessing to the nation’s north of us.
Young people are an integral part of Darwin and the Northern Territory and form a major part of our focus. The Northern Territory has the youngest average age in Australia. (30) We aim to see young people between the ages of 12 and 30 given the opportunity to follow Christ, and find their place in the Great Commission.
Backpackers find their way to Darwin in their ten’s of thousands each year, and we feel compelled to reach them for Christ. In 2004 205,000 backpackers visited Darwin, and they present us with the challenge of presenting these spiritual seekers with truth.
With some of the poorest and most needy nations just north of us, we aim to mobilize people and resources to bless those less fortunate than ourselves. Our mercy ministry arm will focus on sponsoring children in need and poverty, on medical relief and assistance, and on raising awareness amongst our local community and nation.
