ABOUT DARWIN As a ministry of Youth With a Mission International, and as part of Reef to Outback regionally, we affirm and adhere to their values and purpose. We also acknowledge the word of the Lord to us as a region, and to us specifically here in Darwin and the Northern Territory of Australia. The Northern Territory is Australia’s smallest territory numbering just over 200,00 people. However, in terms of geographic size it covers a vast section of northern Australia that includes both arid desert and tropical rainforest. The NT is famous for landmarks such as Ayres Rock (Uluru) Kakadu National Park, and Katherine Gorge, all spectacular natural wonders that draw over 1.7 million visitors to the NT each year. The NT is home to many young people. The average age of 30 represents the youngest median age in Australia. Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine and Tennant Creek are four major centres of populations in the Territory, with these four locations representing over 75% of the population. Darwin is the bustling, growing tropical capital city of the NT with over 110,000 people. It is a city that is expanding quickly both economically and physically. Experts predict Darwin’s population will grow to 180,000 over the next 20 years. It is a city where the people are warm, friendly and hospitable. Darwin is a pioneering city, a city that has overcome overwhelming odds such as the ravages of disease in it’s early history, isolation through sheer distance Japanese invasion during WWII, Cyclone Tracy and other natural disasters. She has always fought back , and honourable trait that is reflected through her persistent people. During the East Timor crisis in 2000 hundreds of fleeing refugees were flown to Darwin and cared for by our community. Similarly, following the Bali bombing which took the lives of many people, Darwin became a hub for care, assistance and healing. Indigenous people make up 29% of the population in the Northern Territory compared to the national average of 10%. We believe the indigenous people hold a key role in seeing revival in Australia, and aim to engage with indigenous youth to see them rise in leadership and fulfil their destiny. Darwin in strategically located as a gateway to Asia, with an exciting multicultural flavour throughout the city. We believe Darwin’s destiny is tied with being a blessing to the nation’s north of us. As a centre of Youth With a Mission operations, we will continue to offer young people the opportunity to train through our excellent Discipleship Training Schools, with a goal to challenging as many people as possible to be involved in the fulfilment of the Great Commission. These schools also provide us with the opportunity to pioneer radical new ministries with young people at the helm, and prepare all students to be launched back in the world to make a difference. We also seek to engage young Christians throughout our region and nation to engage in mission. We will present them with opportunities to be involved in mission trips that we believe will radically challenge and change their lives, and the lives of those they minister to. Young people are an integral part of Darwin and the Northern Territory and form a major part of our focus. The Northern Territory has the youngest average age in Australia. (30) We aim to see young people between the ages of 12 and 30 given the opportunity to follow Christ, and find their place in the Great Commission. Backpackers find their way to Darwin in their ten’s of thousands each year, and we feel compelled to reach them for Christ. In 2004 205,000 backpackers visited Darwin, and they present us with the challenge of presenting these spiritual seekers with truth. With some of the poorest and most needy nations just north of us, we aim to mobilize people and resources to bless those less fortunate than ourselves. Our mercy ministry arm will focus on sponsoring children in need and poverty, on medical relief and assistance, and on raising awareness amongst our local community and nation. The opportunities ahead of us are unlimited and exciting! With God, all things are possible and we look forward to all that we can do together with Him through Reef to Outback Darwin.
